The Challenge

2X

The 2018 United Nations Environmental Protection Outlook report on the State of Waste in Africa indicates that Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation in Africa is projected to double by 2025, from 125 million tons in 2012.

70-80%

While an estimated 70-80% of the MSW generated in Africa is recyclable.

4%

Only 4% of the MSW enters the recycling process. The organic waste, which constitutes the larger part of the MSW, remains to be neglected.

Project Background

Expensive Animal Feed

Smallholder chicken, fish, and pig farmers are faced with the challenge of getting affordable animal feed in recent times which results in low livestock productivity.

Expensive Organic Fertilizer

Vegetable farmers suffer from the high cost of organic fertilizer, which results in low productivity of farming products.

The project seeks specifically to:

Understand

Understand the current and future biowaste streams to inform the design of a business model for sustainable biowaste management

Establish

Establish chicken, fish and pig feed and organic fertilizer value chains.

Optimize

Optimize the potential of BSF biowaste processing

Build

Build capacities and BSF technology knowhow of youth agripreneurs and other stakeholders

The Goal

BBEST project aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder chicken fish, pig and vegetable farmers, and other value chain actors and contribute to improved urban sanitation and climate change mitigation in the the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ghana, Mali, and Niger.

Implementing countries

Partnership and Research for Delivery

The project is constructed around a Partnership for Delivery (P4D) and a Research for Delivery (R4D) component where IITA, together with its partners, will implement four (4) work packages, namely:

1

Evidence generation: biowaste, stakeholder mapping, and situation analysis to guide strategic decisions.

2

Taking BSF systems to scale: Mass production of BSF and design of business models of implemented systems.

3

R4D for optimization of BSF systems for improved quantity and quality production, including feed safety and standards requirements and increased profitability.

4

Capacity development, policy engagement, gender integration and communication.

Target Group

Smallholder chicken, fish, and pig farmers will benefit from the BSF by-products, namely: chicken, fish, and pig feed.

Smallholder vegetable farmers will benefit from the BSF Frass.

Youth agripreneurs will be trained and equipped with the BSF kits to start their ventures.

Private investors will be empowered to take up the business model that will be developed for the BSF by-products.

Other interest groups will be trained on the BSF technology and know-how.
